Software
Most
all the software products do exactly the same thing. Scan
for viruses when told to using the latest patterns that have
been downloaded. I use a free product called AVG. It can be
downloaded at www.grisoft.com.
It schedules to run daily and does automatic pattern updates.
Another
resource is to do an online virus scan. There is a site called
www.trendmicro.com
where you can do a free scan. This is a very good sanity check
even if you have virus software. Use the "Free Tools"
section to locate the scan my PC. They use the very latest
patterns and many times will find a virus that you software
missed.
Schedule
You
can not scan often enough. Even when you have constant protection,
you still need to scan. Another problem is how do you scan
when your computer is turned off, you can't. It becomes much
more efficient to leave your computer on 24x7 and schedule
your scans for the middle of the night. This way you know
it gets done.
Monitor
Check
the scan history and the pattern file date weekly. If either
is not up to snuff find out why.
